Friction Joinery

AutoCAD, Rhino, CNC, Hand Sanding

This design uses friction joinery (no glue or nails) to support itself and the user and is incredibly sturdy. This multifunctional piece can be stacked, as seen in the images below, for a compact storage option or can nestle side by side to provide seating.

Through process sketching, using software programs, and creating laser-cut 3D models, I worked through many iterations of the details of this storage piece before completing the final design. Limited to the use of a single 4’x8’ sheet of ¼” plywood - absolutely beautiful high-quality plywood, I was challenged to use subtractive printing with a CNC machine and employ friction joinery techniques. Possibly my favorite aspect of the process was the element of hand-finishing each piece before assembly.

I am truly honored to have been selected to display my piece in a month-long gallery show at Florida State University!
