Project Goal #3: utilize principles found in the theory of prospect and refuge to encourage staff and visitor well-being

The intent of the new Southwood Physician Partners clinic design is to establish a space for restoration and assist in the long-term well-being of all users, both visitor and provider alike. Users are greeted with neutral and natural tones as they enter the clinic. Integrated overhead lighting above gives new-comers subtle directional cues for supportive wayfinding throughout the space. An anchor wall with custom signage behind the reception desk provides both a sense of prospect for the receptionists as well as clear delineation for visitors. The waiting area is located adjacent to the reception desk for ease of access. It features various seating options for a range of users including spaces for people who use wheelchairs. Wide walkways throughout accommodate multiple users simultaneously and allow for various levels of personal space to be achieved.

Moving further into the clinic, exam rooms are furnished with similar furniture and equipment layouts to support physician and staff transitions throughout the space. Bariatric guest seating, patient recliners, and bariatric and standard exam tables are examples of room customization for visitors. The spacious nurses’ station is furnished with height-adjustable desks, each equipped with a tackable surface and ample storage, for a personalized experience. This space is nested behind an open window partition wall to provide refuge for staff while maintaining sightlines and accessibility to visitors.

Each physician’s office features a low-pile, low threshold area rug to create a comfortable and accessible space with additional acoustic properties. By special request, the offices are equipped with height-adjustable desks and access to natural light with large windows for the well-being of the practitioners. Whether it is 10 minutes or 10 hours of interaction, the needs of the users are the highest priority in this design.
